Bon Café
The Playground
The BON building in Boston, Massachusetts, was opening a new café and sought a comprehensive brand identity. Tasked with this project, we delivered a cohesive suite of materials, including coffee cups, packaging, signage, and more. We chose the name 'BON CAFE' to reflect both the name of the building and its literal translation—good coffee. This was used as a subline, placing it in brackets that were later incorporated as a graphic device throughout. In a continuation of the French theme, we drew inspiration from Matisse’s cutout series and used flat, figurative illustrations to represent the iconography of a café. These convey a rustic, textural quality that enhances the cosy atmosphere of the café and also serve a practical function when indicating ingredients. To enhance this handmade quality, we used printing methods such as screen printing and stamping, which allowed for the use of recycled materials and punchier colours—bold, vibrant hues that ensured the identity felt contemporary. The logo, set in a bold sans-serif typeface, anchors the floating, dynamic illustrations, while a classic sans-serif typeface provides contrast and complements the vintage style of the illustrations.
